Japanese Dude Food: Brunch at Kurobuta

by Jun 28, 2018

Ever Heard of Dude Food? If you’re intrigued, head to Kurobuta to discover the year’s hottest new food trend.

The style of Japanese food in London restaurants in changing. For years we’ve had it in our heads as one of the girlier options for eating out – fresh sashimi, seaweed salads and some matcha tea to end. However, in a similar move to the English craze for posh burgers, fried chicken and brownies the size of your head, Dude Food brings with it the concept of Japanese Comfort Food.

Kurobuta, designed in the style of a casual Japanese izakaya (think pub-like posters on the walls, chalkboards with graffiti, wooden floors and moustached waiters), is leading the way with a Dude Food Brunch held every Saturday from 12 – 4.30pm. The brunch is bottomless – you can feast on unlimited sushi, buns, and hot and cold dishes for £35 (excellent value with such high quality food). Additionally if you want to set your weekend spiralling, you can pay an extra £10 for unlimited wine, prosecco and Asahi beer.

So what exactly is this ‘dude food’? Well, it’s the combination of Japanese classics with more Americanised dishes and flavours. Think Singapore fried chicken with pickled cucumber and kimchee mayo or Salmon Sashimi pizza with truffle ponzu and wasabi tobiko. For dessert there’s even a Matcha Mr Whippy. However this is not comfort food that’s dripping with ketchup and slathered in mayonnaise – these are clever dishes which have been thoughtfully composed and are filled with flavours and Japanese seven spice.

Absolute highlights began from the start – the delicious snacks on arrival including the chargrilled edamame beans which might just be the best in London. If you’re not on the strong stuff, you can try the ‘Super Duper Iced Tea’ or get your gut happy with the Draft Ginger Kombucha.

From the hot dishes you should try Baby Shrimp Tempura with Kimchee and Kimchee Mayo alongside Squid Kara-Age with Jalapeno Dipping Sauce. Get your maki fix with the Yellowtail, Green Chilli and Coriander Hosomaki and you really have to try the BBQ Pork Belly with Peanut Soy Bun. It’s all fantastic though, so enjoy it all – just don’t let your eyes be bigger than your stomach. Pace yourself and order as you go.

Brunch at Kurobuta is accompanied by rock n roll tunes and a live DJ. There’s an accessibility to Japanese dining here that allows people of all ages and tastes to enjoy the menu. The setting is casual yet the food is high end – it’s the very best of both worlds, full of deliciousness just waiting for you to enjoy.
