I’m in East London exploring. As it starts to pour down outside I seek comfort in a coffee shop I find just round the corner from Old Street station. ‘Pitfield’, named after the street it’s on, is typical of what you can expect from most cafes in Shoreditch. It’s quirky, it has quick food, and is a standard destination for creative types who are hiding away from the troubles of the world.
A rustic haven with industrial interiors and shabby chic sprinklings, it has a warm and inviting spirit. You could easily picture it across the pond in Brooklyn, effortlessly oozing cool.
Peckish, I order a fresh baked flatbread sandwich and a cake from the friendly staff before plonking myself down on the large sharing table. I sit in the middle of strangers who are busy typing away, minding their own business as they work.
Trying to do the same, I am distracted by the other wares on sale in Pitfield: the various one-off home and design products (yes, the cafe is also a shop) which initially seem very appealing until you spot the prices! A chandelier caught my eye that would fit happily in an east london loft conversion with exposed brick and quirky artwork. So I decided to hold into my money to save up for one of those first.
The flatbread was alright (pretty standard stuff), but the cake (Cherry and Almond Tart) was yummy and probably the highlight of my light bite. Overall a lovely little location to spend a rainy afternoon.
Visit Pitfield’s website here for more information.
