Baby free and in the heart of Dublin, Emily checks in to The Merrion – and never wants to check out again.
Elegance. That’s the word that kept popping up in my mind whilst enjoying the most luxurious stay at The Merrion, Dublin.
It wasn’t an over the top or pretentious elegance, it was just quietly there – in the building itself (a restoration of four Georgian town houses), in every detail of the rooms (they are out of everything you would want from a 5 star experience) and in the character of the staff and the way they went about their daily service looking after the endless number of happy guests.
Just minutes away from St Stephen’s Green and the bustle of central Dublin, smartly dressed doormen give you a true Irish welcome – and one that makes you feel instantly at home, despite the fact you are walking up the steps to a grand foyer with wide open drawing rooms and exquisite artwork.
Baby free for the first time in months, we spent hours on deckchairs in the central courtyard – an absolute oasis (the word is overused but it truly was) from the fast paced city outside and being looked after by attentive yet discreet staff who grinned as we moved from cups of tea to gin and tonics. The gardens are beautifully maintained and on sunny days you can dine next to the central pool in The Garden Room.
In fact The Garden Room was where we had dinner and it’s description as ‘casually impressive’ was overly modest.
With an early summer evening ahead of us, we sat and enjoyed some amazing creations all focussed around artisan producers and Ireland’s finest – the steak tartare was a real highlight, as were the lamb and the halibut for main. The sommeliers are exceptionally knowledgeable and refreshingly for a 5 star hotel, happy to listen to your budget. Talking of which, if you’re feeling super fancy The Merrion also has Ireland’s only 2 Michelin starred restaurant in ‘Restaurant Patrick Guilbard’ for true foodies to delight over.
Getting back to our room, we’d received the turn down service – which included everything from our iPhone chargers being carefully curled up, to a fancy book mark placed in the magazine I’d been reading. The bed itself was nothing short of heavenly.
As if the hotel experience itself isn’t relaxing enough there’s also a newly refurbished spa in the basement which swallows you up and returns you to reality feeling beyond zen. The deep tissue massage with magical Antonella was incredible and she insisted I went to the silent relaxation room afterwards to reap the benefits even further. Think white fluffy dressing gowns, a stunning pool, fresh fruits and teas and a fitness suite if you’re feeling active.
We only stayed one night but the experience of The Merrion stuck with me. I kept remembering little details, thinking about how thoughtful and helpful each and every staff member had been and wishing I was back enjoying that very special Irish hospitality in an exceptionally special hotel.
