Bringing you our selection of the biggest and baddest adland breaking news from the last 7 days. Because if you’re not at Glasto you need a healthy distraction
The week at a glance:
Ed Sheeran gets socially integrated, it’s pitch time at GHD, a motley crew of brands react fast to World Cup going ons, Carlton Draft give us car racing 80s style, Newcastle Brown Ale take on the yanks and Spotify launch their official Glasto playlist.
Ed Sheeran sings through your ad breaks
A few weeks ago we reported that Sam Smith was to take over a whole ad break to sing live from his concert at Camden Roundhouse, and now Sheeran is at it too. To promote his new album, Atlantic Records released two ads, the first of which aired around 8pm last night on E4, asking viewers to vote on Twitter for the track they wanted dear Ed to play. The second spot, aired around 8:30pm, was a whole ad take over and showed Sheeran singing a live rendition of the song that had the most votes. A nice social interactive feature all round we thinks.
GHD are on the lookout
GHD are on the pursuit for an integrated agency for global digital work. The UK-based haircare brand create most of its online work in-house, but have called a pitch to find an agency to work on their main Christmas campaign and other brand positioning next year. Get your irons at the ready ladies!
Paddy Power diss England
Oh dear England. Paddy Power are making all sorts of timely mischief again, and this time it’s all at your expense. Nice bit of reactive piss-taking.
Suarez gets spoofed
AdLand just loves a good bit of world-stage controversy doesn’t it. Not least because there’s a few brands out there who keep a designer, copywriter and media buyer in a cage with a pot of money ready for these moments. Within 48 hours of the ‘biting incident’, these beauties popped up:
>> Specsavers
>> Snickers
>> Betfair
>> Philips
>> and this beauty (view the video here):
Carlton Draft
From ‘Stralia, we’ve seen a great ad that makes fun of all the car chase cliches we see in Hollywood — brilliantly paired with an ’80s soundtrack. Go get your fill here.
Newcastle Brown Ale and Stephen Merchant
Brit comedy favourite Merchant teams up with NBA in this beautifully (Britishly) dry ad which takes a look at what life would be like if us Brits had ‘own’ and there was no such Independence Day. ‘Britain 2’ sounds quite lovely, we think. Have a look at the spot here.
Spotify’s Glasto playlist
If you’re reading this, you’re probably not there. If you ARE there, I hope to God you’re just reading this as you queue for the loo – or else you need to reassess your priorities. Listen here. Whack it on LOUD in the office, rub some mud on your shins, pour oil on your hair, grab a warm beer and sit back – you’ll be transported there in a second.
Enjoy some great music with or without Glasto. Happy days.
