The Weekly Roundup: 12th Sept 2014

by Sep 12, 2014

Bringing you our selection of the biggest and baddest adland breaking news from the last 7 days.

Because we can’t bring you a royal baby so this will have to do.

The week at a glance:

The Metro teamed up with Stonewall to wear rainbow colours, Walkers put Gary Lineker in a vending machine, and Topshop ditch the runway for Facebook.

A rainbow Metro

Roundup 12th Sept - Metro 1

At the beginning of the week, the Metro devoted an entire issue to promoting Stonewall’s ‘Rainbow Laces’ campaign – aiming to get footballers backing the anti-homophobia movement. Paddy Power have been heavily involved in the campaign (have you seen their new ad? ) and for this one-off they paved the way for other brands to get involved – including Premier Inn, who in a stroke of genius (the likes of which we’ve never seen from the brand) they changed their logo to Premier Out *applause*. A rare show of advertising solidarity for a good cause.

Gary Lineker gets put in his box

Roundup 12th Sept - Walkers

Ok, it’s a vending machine not a box, and he wasn’t ACTUALLY put in it, but still. At 3 bus-stop locations in London, commuters could tweet at the (very cleverly executed) virtual Gary to receive a bag of crisps in return. He also posed for selfies, read War and Peace, and told people their bus had arrived (we can only imagine someone was hiding in a nearby bin controlling him). A super-smart vending machine stunt. For a change. Watch the reactions here.

Topshop offers social fans a unique catwalk

Roundup 12th Sept - LFW

As LFW kicks off, there seem to be a lot of brands planning clever social activations. Hunter’s is one: only their Twitter followers will get instant runway highlights. Topshop are getting in on the act too: immediately post-catwalk on Sunday their Facebook and Instagram fans will get glimpses of clothes from the SS15 collection that WEREN’T featured on the runway, and will be able to buy them immediately. In addition, 5 selected Instagrammers have been invited to curate content for Topshop’s channel throughout the week, and even us lowly folk can get involved by using #TopshopWindow to get our faces on the front of their Oxford Circus store. Oh Topshop, you have been busy.

That’s all for now ladies and gents. Have a nice weekend!
