In the Edition Hotel in Fitzrovia lives a Tavern that promises an utterly glamorous dining experience. Intrigued?
It was the boyfriend’s 30th and I needed somewhere special to celebrate (his success at surviving so long). Having previously had drinks in the rather lovely Edition Hotel, I remembered peering into the neighbouring restaurant and writing it down on my ‘places to visit’. This presented the perfect opportunity and we embarked on an evening out to Berners Tavern.
Berners Tavern is one of the few London venues under the direction of renowned chef Jason Atherton – who trained with the likes of Ferran Adria at el Bulli and Marco Pierre White before joining the Gordon Ramsay Group in 2001. His flagship venue Pollen Street Social opened in 2011 and with a few other restaurants (such as Social Eating House) under his belt, the newest venture offers more of the mouth-watering delights that this brilliant bunch offer.
The venue itself has an air of stately home about it: deliciously opulent, dramatic walls covered in framed artwork, dazzling chandeliers hanging from high ceilings, and impeccably dressed staff. To top it all off, the bar glows with a warm light and holds a huge range of drinks spanning floor to ceiling.
The cuisine somehow lives up to the venue it’s served in. The highlight for me was the very naughty, super posh mac & cheese I had for my main: spiked with truffle oil and brioche crumble this was lip-licking in every way possible. He had a more delicate serving of wild mushroom and prawn orecchiette, which I hear was just as delicious (food envy gladly avoided). Lovely cocktails and wine helped the food go down, and with a rather large hint from me the staff kindly brought out a chocolate fondant (again, pretty bloody delicious) with a candle on top – the cherry to our lovely evening.
I’d be lying if I said dining here wasn’t going to dent your credit card, but the price is absolutely worth it – maybe just keep it mind for special occasions or client-worthy meetings.
