The Weekly Roundup: 1st August 2014

by Aug 1, 2014

Bringing you our selection of the biggest and baddest adland breaking news from the last 7 days. Because it’s better than a pinch and a punch.

The week at a glance:

Cheerios big-up dads, eHarmony match Jeff with a camel, Greenpeace tap into the cat meme craze to help save big cats, and ex-AKQA copywriters set up ManServant. Which does what it says on the tin.

Cheerios teach us #howtodad

Roundup 1st Aug - Cheerios

Not happy with joining the other cereals who market to mums, this one-take Canadian Cheerios ad introduces us to a pretty awesome Dad – who teaches the viewer the important traits you need to have to be a father. Not in a cheesy way. In a tongue-in-cheek ‘this would never actually happen’ way. Thankfully. It’s well done and entertaining – especially the end. Oh and it’s joined by the hashtag #howtodad. Check it out here.

eHarmony and a camel

Roundup 1st Aug - eHarmony

A leap from their usual ‘we’re so glad we found each other!!!!’ ads, eHarmony decided instead to go up against other dating sites and rip their matching process apart in this new spot. Using a camel. And ‘Jeff’ who has absolutely nailed awkward facial expressions. Simple but effective. Intrigued? Have a look at the ad here.

Greenpeace save big cats with little cats

Roundup 1st Aug - Cats save Tigers 2 Roundup 1st Aug - Cats save Tigers

For International Tiger Day, Greenpeace teamed up with the biggest cats on the internet to save the biggest cats in the wild. The campaign, called ‘Cats Save Tigers’ was created by London agency Mr President, and encourages people to visit the campaign site (here) to create their own cat meme and upload it to social feeds using #CatsSaveTigers. There’s also a rather funny video staring the famous feline Lil Bub, watch here.

ManServants for all

Roundup 1st Aug - ManServants

A US startup called ManServants was released into the world this week, claiming to: ‘give every woman exactly what she wants: a man who does exactly what she wants’. We know what you’re thinking, but this is not – we repeat, not – an escort service. The controversial company was founded by two AQKA copywriters who claim the site is “completely PG”. One of the written rules for ManServants: “A ManServant keeps his penis in his pants and out of the lady’s face” gives us an idea of the tonality of the site (take a look here). We’re not sure what to make of this one, what do you think?  Watch the ad here.

G&T o’clock awaits. Have a good one.
