The Weekly Roundup: 24th January 2014

by Jan 24, 2014

Bringing you our selection of the biggest and baddest adland breaking news from the last 7 days. Because you survived Blue Monday and therefore deserve it.

The week at a glance:

This was a busy week ladies and gents. Or maybe we just paid more attention because we’re poor and sober? Who knows. Anyway…Old Spice did it again, Newcastle Brown Ales hilariously flick the Vs at the Super Bowl, French singer Boggie gets real-time retouched in her clever music vid, Google give you their Mobile Playbook, and IKEA engage their beloved fans in order to create a social catalogue.

Phew.

Old Spice Present The Flattering Man

Roundup_Jan24_4

Oh look, Old Spice win digital marketing. Again. Blah blah blah. Snore. EXCEPT YOU CAN’T SNORE BECAUSE YOU’RE WIDE AWAKE BECAUSE YOU’RE STARING IN AWE AT THEIR NEW CAMPAIGN.

Sorry, excuse us. Over excited.

Through nine ‘fake product’ scenarios (such as aftershave that contains real protein – so ridiculously believable), Old Spice trap overtly metrosexual men in their digital snare and give them a virtual slap around the face before suggesting they try Old Spice instead.

Have a look here to see for yourself why we’re so giddy.

Newcastle Brown Ales – If We Made It

Roundup_Jan24_5

The Super Bowl is coming. And AdLand peeps with BIG clients (with BIG budgets) have been slaving away to create this year’s BIG hit. Meanwhile, locked away in what we imagine to be an underground lair (sorry, overexcited again), the team from Newcastle Brown Ales acknowledged they don’t have the budget to play silly buggers with the big dogs, so set out to shake it up a little with their ‘If We Made It’ campaign.

Great copy, humour and a nice little microsite = lots of TWOP lolz. Check it out here.

Boggie and Her Retouched Music Vid

Roundup_Jan24_3

We know we bang the anti-retouching drum a little, but when you see how in just over three minutes someone can look…erm…NOTHING like themselves, then it’s quite amazing slash scary. Oh, and it’s a nice little vid too. Here we go.

Google’s Mobile Playbook

and finally…The IKEA Social Catalogue

Roundup_Jan24_1

IKEA should hold hands with Old Spice and skip merrily down We Smash Digital road. The much-loved flat-pack furniture company sends out catalogues to all addresses in it’s home country Sweden every season. And to engage the people on the other side of the letterbox, they asked them to snap their favourite item on Instagram and use a specific hashtag. After 2 weeks, searching the hashtag gave an entire catalogue’s worth of results. Smart. Take a look here.

Better late than never!

If you think we’ve missed anything world-changing that should be covered, let us know and we’ll put it in next week’s round-up! Email: hello@toworkorplay.com
