Bringing you our selection of the biggest and baddest adland breaking news from the last 7 days. We’re starting the New Year as we mean to go on.
The week at a glance:
Happy New Year!!! We hope you rang in 2014 in style with a mahoosive smooch at midnight and an even-more-mahoosive hangover the following day (we don’t encourage binge drinking but we do encourage quaffing lots of champers in a purely sophisticated manner).
While you were busy lying horizontal in a desperate attempt to mentally work off Christmas leftovers, some exciting stuff was happening in AdLand. Thomson (the holiday-bringers) introduce us to Simon The Ogre, Google make us weepy about searching for stuff, VW give us a teddy tragedy and we (well, NJ) work out how trendy a designer we are.
Thomson Present Simon The Ogre
This ad aggressively breaks the generic ‘beautiful couple/family/singleton running along a beach’ mould…by starring a big, hairy, ugly ogre. Called Simon. A 2 minute spot delivers Simon’s story, from Ogredom to (SPOILER ALERT!) hunky-man-in-water-dom. While it may not be everyone’s cup of tea, the insight behind the creative is perfect and the execution is definitely one to remember. Good job, Beattie McGuinness Bungay.
Google – Search On
To reflect on 2013, Google bring us our most searched for moments weaved together in a rather lovely ad. From celebrations to commiserations, individual achievements to group triumphs, it’s a great visual depiction of the year that was: enjoy.
VW’s Teddy Tragedy
In a similar style to Volvo’s JCVD ad which subtly demonstrates functionality in a non-rational, non-dull way, VW show us another side to their automatic distance control technology. The love story between two window-facing stuffed toys in different cars is torn apart as the VW’s clever sensors put some distance (‘tyres and tarmac, tyres and tarmac’) between them. Wrapping the product up in an emotional story works like a dream: if you’re not in the right place to be able to deal with crying bunnies, don’t click here.
and finally…….Are You a Trendy Designer?
Never ones to reject a fun pop quiz, this little treat from Pencil Scoop caught our attention. A series of design-related questions such as ‘Have you ever designed your own icons?’ are asked, and you pick from the relevant responses to reveal your score. NJ scored a respectable 6/8 and won the title of ‘Dribbble Hipster’. Not dribble as in drool, but Dribble as in this. In case you got as confused as JB for a second there…
Kicking off 2014 in style…
