This Girl Can: The Day I Decided To Set Up My Own Business

by Nov 22, 2017

Some things happen for a reason. Other things you have to force through to make a change. Here Nat discusses a new business path and what the future may have in store.

It’s a funny thing turning 30. Although I feel no physical change and despite the fact I realised a while ago I shouldn’t live by deadlines, it does make you think. Think about career choices, work / life balance and re-evaluate what really matters. It’s not the fact I’ve set unachievable goals that I’m holding myself hostage to, it’s that in the long run am I the happiest me I can be? Do I want to continue on this same path and move my way up the ladder? And what’s become more apparent is that it seems like I’m not the only one. Speaking to friends from all different spheres of my life, we all seem to be in state of uncertainty, a grey area where we are left asking which path we should take. Despite the fact that we’ve done pretty well so far and are at high points in our careers, the question keeps arising — is this everything I wanted and more?

Ever the helpful friend and loving daughter, for years I have helped out with design projects from business branding to wedding invites. After returning from the latest wedding where I had created the stationery, Tom asked me for the gazillionth time why I haven’t set up my own stationery and design business. Although the question was not a new one this time something resonated and that very evening Nat’s Paper Studio was born.

After a few days of branding, building a website and furiously moving petals around photography set-up’s (and stopping the cats using my work as toys), my new baby, my Paper Studio was launched.

So what is my new venture? Here’s a little summary: With my Paper Studio I have married together my experience as a designer in the advertising world with an insatiable passion for all things bright and beautiful. As a self-confessed design magpie, my addiction covers everything from typography to branding, stationery, packaging, calligraphy, copper foiling, content, digital creative and more. I offer services from wedding stationery and styling, party invites, baby announcements, product design, branding and website design to wall art, greetings cards, paper products and typography prints. You name it, I can design it!

Although I don’t know what the future holds for my new venture, I will pursue and push towards a dream of running my studio alongside TWOP and working on projects that make me proud.

To echo Marisol’s article it’s never too late to make a change. No matter how daunting it may be, how courageous you may have to become or how hard you have to work, ultimately if it makes you the happiest version of yourself you can be then you’ve achieved your ultimate goal.

At the end of the day positive change will never happen without you making it happen. Ask yourself, is it time to take a leap of faith and transform your career for the better? Only you can decide.

Wish me luck!
